Effectively Dealing with People with Borderline Personality Disorder

The people who have Borderline Personality Disorder or BPD often exhibit difficulties in creating relationship and even maintaining relationships with their family. Oftentimes, if you have loved ones who are suffering from such developmental disability, you know that they often exhibit mood swings, bouts of anger, impulsiveness, and helplessness. That’s why it’s important to partner with professionals who can help you manage the difficult attitudes your loved ones are manifesting. You must also prepare for the roller coaster of emotion, without any end in sight, when you care for your loved ones suffering from BPD. Here are suggested things from Bright Horizon Homes which you must do:

  • Avoid isolating the person. It is tempting to isolate your loved ones and be distant from them so that you’ll not be affected by their troubling attitudes. However, distancing yourself from your loved ones will do more harm than good. It complicates their issues even more and affects your family dynamics. It should be your priority to keep in touch and let them feel that you’re there to constantly support and guide them. You need to reassure loved ones that your presence will become their source of support in times when they need some reality check.
  • Communicate with them effectively. In order for you to understand the deep seated emotions of your loved ones with BPD, always have a listening ear. When you are engaged in a conversation, set aside your judgment about them and show interest to what they are saying. Although you don’t have to agree with all the things they’re telling you, you still have to be sympathetic about their emotions.
  • Be calm always when they act out. There will be a lot of instances where your loved ones will act out their frustrations. For example, they might accuse you of something. Although such accusations might be unfounded, you need to avoid being overly defensive whenever they do it. Being defensive no matter what kind of accusations they will hurl at you will only inflame the situation and make them become even angrier. You need to walk away just to give time for both of you to cool down.
  • Find groups for support. You must find a support group in your community, such as other families who have loved ones who have BPD. Through these people, you know where you should run to for help whenever you’re dumbfounded in about dealing the difficult behavior of your loved ones.

There are a lot of families who don’t know that they have loved ones suffering from BPD. Professional help matters, especially those from Developmental Disability Care Services in Kanabec Dr. Wasilla Alaska, in terms of getting an accurate diagnosis for BPD. Through the correct diagnosis, it can set the course of rehabilitation for the person affected.
