4 Ways to Improve Communication with a Special Loved One

Have you been struggling to make conversation with the person you’re caring for?

Bright Horizon Homes has a couple of suggestions for you:

  1. Identify barriers.

There are several factors that your message isn’t properly received by your loved one. It may be because they are distracted, they have a hearing problem, or that they have other things on their mind. But once you are able to identify these said barriers to communication, you will have an easier time in giving it a solution.

That’s what developmental disability care services in Alaska always aim to practice. If you’d like, we can give you the assistance you need in order to properly connect and give better care for your family member.

  2. Refrain from interrupting sentences.

Does the person you’re caring for take a bit too long to express the thoughts that they have in mind? It might be tempting to simply just cut them off and speak the words yourself, but you mustn’t as it can be interpreted in an offensive way. (You wouldn’t want to be interrupted while you’re speaking, would you?) Rather than interjecting, offer cues and make use of yes and no questions. This will facilitate better communication and prevent misunderstandings too.

  3. Ask for clarification if needed.

We’re often too quick to say “Mhmm” or “Yes” even when we’re not sure what the other party is saying. Maybe it’s because we trust that our minds will be able to understand the context of the message being delivered, allowing us to make a reply just fine.

But if you’re on the other side of the conversation, it can feel a bit negative. For one, you’d assume the other person has a complete understanding of what you have shared. But in actuality, they don’t.

Be sure to remember and practice these pointers the next time you’d like to speak to your family member about residential homes in Wasilla, Alaska. Politely ask for clarification if you’re unsure of what they have to say. This will prevent you from making inaccurate assumptions, and it will ensure that both of you are on the same page.

  4. Concentrate on one topic.

Have you ever joined a conversation only to realize that different topics are being discussed all at once? And by the time you’re ready to share your thoughts, they’ve already moved on to another topic! It’s not a good experience, isn’t it?

Well, that’s something akin to what your loved one feels when you’re trying to discuss multiple things with them at a time. It’s not only frustrating on their part, but on yours as well. As a solution to this, you can create a list of topics that you want to discuss. This may seem a bit over the top, but it will help you and your loved one come to terms on different topics. Plus, it will make sure that you don’t forget anything important too!
